In this spirit, singer Miguel‘s second album Kaleidoscope Dream combined strands of swoony psychedelic rock with dreamy soul harmonies. The singer, who coined the phrase “eclec-tric”, has been credited with pushing collaborators like Alicia Keys out of their comfort zones. He also recently tweeted a picture of himself with BeyoncĂ©, suggesting he’s been working on her next album. He summed up the musical shift to LA Times: “I hope more artists who are R’n’B at the core and pushing the boundaries will join me in embracing the fact that [the genre] did become a stereotype.” He told them “I’m proud to wave the flag for what’s coming.”
“The Big & Best of 2012″ live stream (only SIX days away, guys!) is already ridiculously stacked with so much cool stuff. Not only will some of our fave celebs take us through this year’s most unforgettable pop culture moments, but there will be performances from Bruno Mars, Alt-J, Metric, and more. (And let’s not forget the “Last Fans Standing” fan army showdown!) We couldn’t be more ready to rock out/turn into SQEE-ing fangirls with our current artist roster, but now we’re super excited to say that we’ve added another singer to the list — Miguel!
Performing a number of his hits, like the Grammy-nominated “Adorn” (he’s got five Grammy noms, btw), we’re basically THIS close to full on freaking out. We’ll just have to do our best to scrounge up what’s left of our dignity and not make TOTAL fools out of ourselves. Deep breaths are key, as is a cold shower following what’s sure be an intensely sexy performance. (If you’ve heard Miguel’s excellent Kaleidoscope Dream, then you know his potential for clothing-shedding jams). OK…exhale. NOPE, STILL CRAZY EXCITED.
Big & Best of 2012: A Year-End Celebration Presented by T-Mobile goes LIVE at 12 p.m. on 12/12/12. Watch at www.bigandbestof2012.com for 8 hours of LIVE performances by Bruno Mars, Grace Potter, Metric, Alt-J, Thompson Square, First Aid Kit, and Dustin Lynch, plus surprise guest appearances, prize giveaways, special editions of “RapFix Live,” “Big Morning Buzz Live,” “MTV News After Hours,” “You Oughta Know,” and much more!!
3. Miguel, Kaleidoscope Dream (RCA)
Miguel spent 2012 dabbling with the sounds of R&B’s past and possible future, shading them together into gems like “Adorn”—a track that smolders as classically as “Sexual Healing,” even while oversize blots of sci-fi bass crawl around its underside. If the title Kaleidoscope Dream doesn’t tell you where he wound up, his interpolation of the Zombies’ “Time of the Season” on the second track will: This is R&B with a very psychedelic spin.
Miguel is nominated for several Grammy Awards. Check out his nominations below:
Song Of The Year
Best R&B Performance
Best R&B Song
Best Rap Song
“Lotus Flower Bomb”
Best Urban Contemporary Album

Miguel is taking control of SWRV with his very own music video playlist. Find out what videos he picked on his SWRV Takeover premiere, Wednesday 12/5 at 6p ET. Watch a preview video below:
Best Known For: “Sure Thing,” “Adorn,” “All I Want Is You,” Jaheim’s “Finding My Way Back”
Why He’s Dope: In his fairly short career, the 26-year-old has nailed majorly slept on heavy hitters. Miguel put pen to paper for Usher’s Here I Stand and Raymond v. Raymond and wrote Musiq Soulchild’s “If U Leave,” featuring Mary J. Blige. Judging by his latest hits, Miguel has mastered the art of writing about love and all its dimensions, whether it’s the simple things (“Let’s Just Be”), pure physical lust (“Quickie”) or showering your partner with affection (“Adorn”).
